SMITHFIELD, N.C. –Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell apologized Sunday for calling Hispanics “trashy” and saying the growing Latino population in his county was “breeding like rabbits.”
Bizzell issued the apology after The News & Observer of Raleigh printed the comments in a Sunday article about his frustration with the changing face of the county where he grew up.
“Everywhere you look, it’s like little Mexico around here,” he said in the Sunday article.
Bizzell said in a one-paragraph statement that it wasn’t his intention to make broad statements that reflected on legal and law-abiding Hispanics. He said his comments, made during interviews for a series of stories, were influenced by his anger over the death of a boy in April who was killed by a Hispanic drunken driver who previously had been convicted of driving while impaired.
“I obviously let my anger over this crime flash during the N&O interview,” he said in his statement. “This is not a reflection on all immigrants, as legal immigration is both wanted and needed.”
Bizzell, a former president of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association, has worked to make the state more aggressive state in deporting illegal immigrants. He couldn’t be reached Monday for comment.
His comments were the talk of the county Monday, where some residents said they agreed with the sheriff and others saying he shouldn’t have made such statements.
“If it’s illegal for them to be here, then I don’t think they should be here. But I don’t think it’s right to classify any whole group of people as trashy,” Smithfield resident Robin Miura said. “A lot of people are not going to agree with me.”
Cookie Pope, chairwoman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners, said Bizzell is one of the best sheriffs in the state.
“He has a proven record, and you can’t argue with a man’s record,” Pope said. “Sheriff Bizzell is one of the finest elected officials we have in the county.”
Such recommendations and Bizzell’s apology aren’t enough for some Hispanic advocates.
Tony Asion, executive director of the nonprofit group El Pueblo, said the published comments made him so angry he had to stop reading the article.
“I don’t want his apology. I want his badge,” said Asion, a native of Cuba. 
“As a 20-year veteran of the Delaware State Police force, I resent the fact that he’s even a cop.”
Bizzell’s comments go beyond the issue of illegal immigration and are racist, Asion said.
“This is unacceptable for an elected official, much less for the top law enforcement officer in the county,” he said. “Some action will be taken on this.”
